Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PLAB exam tough?

The PLAB exam is rigorously designed to ensure patient safety in the UK, making it a tough assessment of your medical capabilities. It strictly evaluates whether you can safely apply medical science and clinical skills at the level of a doctor entering their second year of the Foundation Programme (FY2).

Is the PLAB exam difficult to pass?

While the exam is certainly difficult, it is highly passable with dedicated preparation. The difficulty largely stems from adapting to UK-specific medical practices, NHS guidelines, and the fast-paced OSCE format of Part 2.

What are the PLAB exam questions like?

The format depends entirely on the part of the exam you are taking. For PLAB 1, you have to answer 180 Single Best Answer (SBA) multiple-choice questions. You will read a short clinical scenario and choose the single most appropriate diagnosis, investigation, or treatment from 5 options. In PLAB 2, you face 16 practical clinical scenarios (OSCE stations) where you must physically interact with anatomical models or actors playing the roles of patients to demonstrate your clinical and communication skills.

How should I prepare for the PLAB exam?

Amity Online Study Abroad helps you prepare for the PLAB test by reviewing the official GMC blueprint. Then, study through mock tests and familiarise yourself with UK-specific clinical guidelines. We will help you thoroughly throughout the process.

How many steps are in the PLAB exam?

There are exactly two steps in the PLAB journey: Part 1 and Part 2. They must be completed sequentially. You must first pass the written assessment (PLAB 1) before the GMC will allow you to book the practical clinical assessment (PLAB 2).
